The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol 170th Basic Hybrid School – Now Accepting Applications Applications will be accepted from July 5, 2026, through September 4, 2026. Serve with Loyalty, Integrity, and Professionalism. This Hybrid Basic School offers qualified applicants the opportunity to begin their career with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol will pay qualified applicants to attend Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) at an approved BLET program within their communities. Salary Range: $51,852 - $62,932 Selected applicants who successfully complete all hiring requirements and Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) will continue to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Academy for agency-specific training. As a member of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, you will contribute to public safety by enforcing traffic laws and reducing crime on North Carolina highways. Duties include: Responding to emergencies Investigating motor vehicle collisions Enforcing state laws Assisting motorists Testifying in court Working with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies Providing professional service to the citizens and visitors of North Carolina Employee Referral Bonus Note: This job classification qualifies for the Employee Referral Bonus Program. If you were referred by a current North Carolina State Highway Patrol employee and are ultimately hired, the referring employee may qualify for an Employee Referral Bonus. Basic Qualifications To apply, an applicant must: Be 21 years of age by the first day of Basic School and no more than 39 years of age on the first day of Basic School. Possess a High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) . Score at or above a 10th-grade reading level on standardized testing. Be a United States Citizen or Naturalized Citizen . Have no felony convictions . Have no convictions for any serious misdemeanor offense . Possess a valid driver's license and a good driving record. Be willing to live and work anywhere in the State of North Carolina . Have 20/30 vision in each eye , with uncorrected vision no worse than 20/200 in each eye, corrected to 20/30 in each eye. If an applicant meets the basic qualifications listed above, the applicant must successfully complete the following stages of the application process before being considered for employment: Polygraph Examination Extensive Background Investigation Review Board (Interview Panel) Medical/Physical Examination (including drug screening) Initial Assessment (Applicants must score 60% or higher on the Cooper Physical Fitness Test) Psychological Examination Colonel's Review A successful officer demonstrates the: Ability to learn, interpret, and impartially apply the applicable provisions of the motor vehicle laws of North Carolina. Ability to collect and present information on patrol activities and investigations in oral and written form. Ability to exercise authority while treating the general public courteously. Ability to read calmly and quickly under emergency conditions.
