Description of Work The North Carolina Zoo is expanding, making this an exciting opportunity to join our team. We are seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to serve as a 2nd & 3rd Shift Assistant Emergency Operations–Security team member. In this role, Assistant Emergency Operations–Security team members support Emergency Operations, which provides various public safety, security, and related services and programs that contribute to a safe and secure zoo environment inclusive of guests, employees, facilities, animal collection, plant collection, and art collection. Services consist of 24/7/365 security and zoo‑wide radio and telephone communications operations; emergency response and planning; life safety systems (sprinklers, fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, and fire alarms); medical services including First Aid, CPR and AED skills; and administrative services including parking and traffic control, escort of vendors and contractual staff, assisting with and/or providing tours, providing public information and education; maintaining a lost and found program; and access to the zoo after hours. This branch’s operations are an integral part of the zoo’s strategic and operational planning. Staff in this branch are non‑sworn security officers and are charged with providing security operations in a manner consistent with the environment of the zoo as a tourism destination and accredited institution. This position works under the direct supervision of the Emergency Operations Branch Supervisor and/or Team Leaders and is expected to collaborate effectively with coworkers, demonstrate strong motivation, and—once trained—perform duties with professionalism and a high level of independence. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: *Politely and diplomatically enforces policies and procedures concerning both guests and employees. *Responds appropriately and assists in potential emergency situations. *Follows established guidelines to promote the safety of guests and staff. *Closing and/or opening the park. *Securing and/or opening buildings and gates as required. *Performing security patrols throughout the shift. *Answering alarms and monitoring building temperatures as required. *All other duties as assigned. Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following are preferred: Management Prefers Experience in safety or security operations, including patrolling facilities, responding to emergencies, using security equipment, and working effectively in varied weather and overnight conditions while following established procedures and instructions. Position & Physical Requirements Ability to work in extreme weather conditions typical to Central NC (heat, rain, or cold). Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions. Possesses sufficient cognitive ability, auditory and visual acuity, and communication skills to perform essential duties and follow general safety practices. Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, reaching, standing, walking, and lifting or carrying 30 lbs. Must have the ability to navigate paved as well as rough or uneven pathways. Must be willing and able to work varied shifts, including holidays and weekends. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license or obtain one within 90 days of employment. Perform other duties as assigned.
