About Tempo
Based in San Diego, California, Tempo develops thermochemical energy storage (TCES) systems designed for energy-intensive industries. The platform enables industrial operators to shift energy use over time by sourcing power when it is most cost-effective and enables the electrification of high-temperature industrial heat at a cost advantage to using fossil fuels. By storing electricity thermochemically, the system delivers a continuous stream of combustion-free, high-temperature air at up to 1,200°C.
Tempo is backed by leading climate and energy investors, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and Prelude Ventures.

Job Description
Tempo is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Engineering Technician with strong welding capabilities to produce engineered parts and assemble testing apparatus, instruments, sensors, prototypes, and power electronic components. The ideal candidate is a driven professional who has graduated from a strong technical program, has at least 4 years of hands-on experience, and is eager to bring their energy and foundational skills to a fast-paced startup environment. You will work both independently and collaboratively to bring our engineering designs to life. This role is integral to the development and refinement of high-temperature energy storage components, offering an incredible opportunity to work on complex R&D projects and grow your career at the cutting edge of thermochemical energy storage technology.
Key Responsibilities
Interpret 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, and spec charts to plan and execute part manufacturing; measure, mark, and cut raw materials accordingly
Perform precision TIG/MIG welding on structural assemblies and operate machine shop equipment (mills, lathes, drill presses, band saws) to create or modify parts
Assemble complex mechanical and electromechanical systems as required
Inspect finished components for dimensional accuracy, weld integrity, and defects
Modify and repair parts, prototypes, and test rigs to support agile R&D needs using welding, grinding, cutting, and machining techniques
Work with high-temperature and specialty materials (refractory metals, ceramics, alloys) to meet durability and performance requirements for thermochemical applications
Partner with engineers to interpret technical drawings, troubleshoot fabrication challenges, and recommend design improvements for manufacturability
Inspect fabricated and welded components for structural integrity, finish, and dimensional accuracy to ensure parts meet required tolerances
Maintain welding gear and machine tools in optimal working condition; follow all safety protocols when welding, handling high-temperature materials, and operating machinery
Record prototype builds, assembly procedures, fabrication parameters, and component modifications, providing real-time feedback to engineering and R&D teams
Qualifications
Required:
Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, formal welding certification, or completion of a technical/trade school program
4 or more years of hands-on experience in mechanical fabrication, welding, and assembly; experience in an R&D or startup environment a plus
Proficiency in TIG and MIG welding on various metals
Experience with manual mills, lathes, grinders, and general metalworking tools
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications
Advanced experience with high-temperature and specialty materials (ceramics, alloys, refractory metals) or willingness to learn
Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to work to tight tolerances
Genuine interest in learning and growing within an R&D or startup environment; comfortable wearing multiple hats to get the job done
Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify and solve fabrication challenges in real time
Clear communicator able to collaborate effectively with engineers and team members in a fast-paced R&D environment
Experience in high-temperature applications, thermal systems, or energy storage
Knowledge of materials science, particularly around fabrication and welding of heat-resistant materials
Familiarity with safety standards and best practices in fabrication and high-temperature R&D settings
Preferred:
Experience with electromechanical assembly, wiring, and integration of prototype systems
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control system documentation
Familiarity with sensors, thermocouples, heaters, and industrial instrumentation; experience with thermal or energy storage systems a plus
