Night shift (General working hours: 11 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.). Overtime, weekends and holiday work may be required TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: PROVISIONAL (TPV) This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service Examination process for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years. Under supervision, the Asphalt Finisher spreads, rakes and finishes asphalt mixtures in connection with street maintenance and repair projects. Responsibilities include: operating asphalt kettle and tool heather; assisting in the clean-up of job site after asphaltic repairs; setting up job-sites in a safe manner; and performing related duties as required.   The essential functions and duties of the position include: Spreads and rakes asphaltic mixtures Irons asphalt to obtain a compact and smooth surface. Clean cut-outs and prepares sub-grades before paving Assists in clean-up of job site after asphaltic repairs Sets up job site (including cones, barricades, high-rises and signs) in a safe manner Completes standard job reports May operate the screed on an asphalt paver Will be the grounds person on asphalt milling machine May operate asphalt kettle and tool heater Drives a vehicle to work sites. Perform other functions outlined in the 7404 Asphalt Finisher job classification Minimum Qualifications Education: None Experience: Two (2) years of verifiable experience in street paving and repair work as an asphalt worker. License and Certification: Possession of a valid California Driver's License Desirable Qualifications The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring. Experience serving as a grounds person on high-production road milling or asphalt grinding machinery Experience operating heavy asphalt paving equipment (e.g. Caterpillar, Volvo, etc.) on large-scale commercial or civil projects Note: Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
