Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago Job Description General Summary:      The Manager of Spiritual Care serves as a role model for the organization’s mission, vision, values, and ethical commitments. This position provides leadership, expertise, and education in spiritual care, bereavement care, ethics, and advance directives, while overseeing the day-to-day operations of Spiritual Care Services. The Manager supervises spiritual care and bereavement staff, interns, and volunteers, and develops, implements, and oversees programming for patients, family members, guests, staff, trainees, and physicians. The role supports the spiritual care team in delivering 24/7 employee wellbeing and psychosocial support and provides leadership for the organization-wide RISE Peer Support Program. Essential Job Functions: Leadership & Program Direction Models organizational values, ethical standards, and healthy teamwork while fostering a supportive and accountable department culture. Leads the implementation and ongoing management of Spiritual Care and Heartlight bereavement programs in alignment with organizational mission, values, and departmental goals. Advocates for high-quality spiritual and bereavement care services and serves as a subject matter expert to support culturally and spiritually responsive care. Operational & Staff Management Manages day-to-day operations of Spiritual Care and Bereavement Services, including staffing, scheduling, budgeting, timekeeping, policies, and evidence-based practices. Supervises chaplains and bereavement professionals, providing coaching, performance feedback, professional development, and ongoing education. Oversees departmental meetings, memorial services, remembrance events, support groups, and the management of chapel, prayer spaces, and related environments. Clinical Leadership & Staff Support Provides expert clinical consultation, mentorship, and support to spiritual and bereavement care staff to ensure high-quality patient, family, and staff services. Serves as an on-call leader as assigned, supporting continuity of spiritual care services during off-hours. Coordinates staff support responses following traumatic events, stress, or loss, including debriefings and psychosocial support activities. Collaboration & Organizational Engagement Participates in the Family Services Leadership team and represents Spiritual Care Services on interdisciplinary committees, workgroups, and task forces. Leads or supports organizational programs and initiatives such as the RISE Peer Support Program, Heartlight Advisory Council, and Schwartz Rounds Wellbeing program. Contributes to policy development, education, community engagement, and professional networking while maintaining ongoing professional development. Minimum Requirements: Education: Minimum of Master’s Degree in Theology or Divinity (e.g., Master of Divinity (MDiv), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Theology (MTh)) from an accredited theological seminary or university. 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from an Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) approved site. Certification:   Ordination and/or ecclesiastical endorsement by a faith denomination/group. Current Board-Certified Chaplain with one or more of the following: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Nesahama: National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC). Job Related Experience: Minimum 5 years spiritual care experience in acute care setting or with children and families, or equivalent. Management Experience: Clinical supervision and project management experience required; 2-4 years in supervisor/manager role with progressive management experience preferred.  Departmental goal setting and strategic planning experience preferred. Skills/ Knowledge: Educated on trauma informed care and critical incident stress management.  Ability to think proactively, act creatively, and take initiative appropriately.  Excellent communication, critical-thinking, and interpersonal skills.  Demonstrated ability to work as a part of multiple teams.  Demonstrated ability to focus on building and maintaining healthy institutional systems. Spanish language abilities and skills strongly preferred. Ability to communicate and present the programs effectively, work as a member of a team and adapt to the changing health care environment essential. Shift: Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm Hybrid, may work from home one day per week (based on daily operational needs) after 90-day introductory period. Education Master's Degree: Theology (Required) Pay Range $83,200.00-$137,280.00 Salary At Lurie Children’s, we are committed to competitive and fair compensation aligned with market rates and internal equity, reflecting individual contributions, experience, and expertise. The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position.
