Job Description Summary
The Associate Director of Student Life, under general direction, serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, provides oversight and strategic guidance for designated functional areas within Student Life. This role supports the Director in advancing departmental priorities and enhancing the student experience through programs, services, and initiatives that promote education, outreach, involvement, and support.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Strategic Initiatives
Provides strategic leadership for assigned functional area(s), including planning, implementation, and assessment of programs and services. Contributes to the development and execution of departmental strategic priorities in alignment with Student Life and Division of Student Affairs goals. Establishes goals, outcomes, and assessment measures to evaluate effectiveness and inform continuous improvement. Leads or supports departmental initiatives, projects, and innovation efforts that enhance student engagement, learning, and well-being. Serves as a member of the Student Life Leadership Team.
Program and Operational Oversight
Oversees the coordination, delivery, and evaluation of programs, services, and outreach initiatives that support student success and community engagement. Ensures programs align with Student Life’s mission of education, outreach, support, and involvement. Identifies opportunities to improve processes, service delivery, and operational efficiency. Supports crisis response, student support coordination, and departmental risk management efforts as appropriate.
Staff Supervision and Development
Directly oversees the hiring, training, and evaluation of assigned staff, graduate assistants, and student employees within assigned areas. Provides ongoing professional development support. As part of the Senior Leadership Team, provides guidance and mentoring of department leadership and assists Director in day-to-day oversight. Fosters a positive and collaborative team culture aligned with Texas A&M core values.
Budget and Resource Management
Assists with budget development and oversight for assigned areas. Monitors expenditures and ensures effective stewardship of resources. Contributes to data-informed decision-making through reporting and analysis.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
Builds and maintains collaborative relationships across Student Life, the Division of Student Affairs, academic units, and campus/community partners. Represents Student Life on committees, task forces, and collaborative initiatives. Supports partnerships that enhance student learning, engagement, and access to resources.
Compliance and Policy Implementation
Ensures compliance with university policies, state and federal regulations, and risk management requirements. Assists in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned to support departmental and divisional priorities.
Qualifications
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Eight years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
3-5 years of (post Masters) full-time experience in progressively responsible positions in higher education or related area.
Thorough grounding through both formal study and experience with higher education law.
Ability to develop and lead teams, create and manage budgets, develop and execute fundraising efforts, plan strategically, assess and evaluate programs and services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.
Knowledge of and experience with computers, budgets, administration, and student development.
Ability to present material to small or large audiences.
