Agency Adult Correction Division COO - Operations Job Classification Title HVAC Mechanic I (S) Position Number 60060063 Grade NC08 About Us The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Description of Work Reporting to HVAC Supervisor at a medium custody male correctional facility, this position is primarily responsible for providing journey level work in the areas of Heating/Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Hot Water Supply & also Plumbing and Food Service Equipment. Other responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Performing construction, maintenance, and the repair of air-conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms. 2. Maintaining refrigeration units and their control systems. 3. Receiving work assignments generally in the form of work orders indicating the nature of the problem. 4. Identifying the cause of the problem, determining materials and tools, needed and method of repair, and carrying out repair procedures independently on most jobs. 5. Executing larger, costlier, exceptional, and/or more complex jobs that may be reviewed by a technical supervisor to determine extent of malfunction, to assure that proper work methods are being followed and that work is of acceptable quality. 6. Training new mechanics and/or supervising the work of offenders. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred: Documented experience in HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) Systems. About Nash Correctional Institution Nash Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility located in Nashville, Nash County NC. It houses approximately 800 male offenders. The facility provides offender labor to two Correction Enterprises operations located on site: the Optical Plant and the Print Plant. The Optical Plant manufactures eyeglasses for customers such as Medicaid and the Division of Services for the Blind. The Print Plant is a full-service print shop dedicated to printing services for state government agencies, public school systems, state community colleges and universities, and non-profit organizations.
