The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the maintenance and reliability of all mechanical systems at Covestro's South Deerfield facility. This role supports shift mechanics with day-to-day maintenance needs and collaborates with other departments on projects. Daily activities include evaluating, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical systems within the extrusion process, including process equipment, rotating equipment, material handling equipment, and central utilities.
Major Tasks and Responsibilities
Collaboration & Communication
Work with engineering and other departments to plan and support mechanical installations and repairs
Work with vendors and contractors for material procurement and troubleshooting
Communicate openly across teams, shifts, and departments to support repairs and projects
Maintenance & Repair
Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair all mechanical and process equipment within areas of responsibility, including process cooling systems, compressors, extruder cooling systems, pumps, heat exchangers, and gearboxes
Diagnose complex equipment failures and restore operation as quickly as possible to minimize downtime and production losses, while balancing multiple shifting priorities
Perform component-level repairs and replacements including pumps, heat exchangers, gearboxes, blade changes, etc.
Diagnose and resolve heating and cooling system problems
Interpret data from test equipment, documentation, and operational input to expedite repairs
Perform skilled mechanical work including fabrication, assembly, welding, alignment, rigging, burning, cutting, and pipefitting; occasionally support other trades as needed
Support simple standalone projects or contribute to larger projects as part of a team under the direction of higher-level mechanics
Perform some process-level troubleshooting in addition to mechanical repairs
Clean production dies and other tooling
Preventive Maintenance & Documentation
Conduct and complete all scheduled PMs, testing, and calibration of facility mechanical and process equipment
Create and manage Work Orders in SAP MtS; apply time to projects accurately
Assist in developing and updating PM procedures to ensure accuracy, including correct lubricants, greases, and specifications
Safety
Model strong safety awareness and knowledge of plant processes and procedures for other Maintenance Technicians
Respond promptly to identify and correct unsafe conditions; maintain equipment to ensure safe operations
Perform Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures for all machinery and equipment repairs, including new installations
Maintain good housekeeping practices and actively participate in department safety and housekeeping activities
Organization & Flexibility
Assist with organization of spare parts and tooling
Willingness to work overtime, weekends, shutdowns, and alternate shifts as needed
Willingness to learn other areas of the department and provide coverage for other positions
Basic Qualifications
High school diploma
2+ years of experience at the Covestro South Deerfield facility with previous industrial maintenance experience; OR 5+ years of commercial or industrial mechanical experience (industrial preferred)
Valid drivers license
Preferred Qualifications
Trade School degree with a concentration in mechanics or maintenance
NCCER Millwright and/or NCCER Pipefitter Certification
Knowledge and Skills
Working knowledge of computers and proficiency with standard software applications
Certified forklift operator or ability to obtain certification
Prior lead role experience or a desire to obtain an electrical license is a plus.
The starting pay for this role is $36.63/hour.
