Nursing Academic Advisor
The College of Nursing Academic Advisor provides comprehensive academic advising and student success support for undergraduate and graduate nursing students and prospective nursing students as directed by the Nursing Advisement Center Supervisor. The Advisor assists students in planning their academic programs, understanding admission and licensure requirements, progressing toward graduation, and accessing university resources that promote academic and personal success.
What you’ll do in this position:
Provide Academic Advising and Educational Planning for College
Provide individualized academic advising for prospective, pre-nursing, and nursing students for undergraduates and graduate programs..
Assist students with degree planning, course selection, registration, graduation planning, and academic policies.
Advise students regarding General Education, Religion, and Nursing curriculum requirements.
Promote Student Success and Retention
Meet with students experiencing academic, personal, or program-related challenges.
Develop individualized success plans, academic improvement plans, and monitor student progress.
Connect students with university resources including Academic Support, Counseling and Psychological Services, Accessibility Center, Financial Aid, and other campus services.
Support Nursing Admissions, Registration, Scholarships, and Student Progression
Advise prospective applicants regarding admission requirements and application competitiveness.
Assist students with application preparation and admission-related questions.
Coordinate Advising Programs and Student Communications
Support the Nursing Advisement Supervisor in projects related to the students and the advisement center as assigned.
Help develop and maintain advising resources, instructional materials, and student communications.
Professionalism and College/University Involvement
Collaborate with faculty and staff to support student success and retention when needed.
Participate in required university, regional, and state advising trainings, conferences, and professional development opportunities.
Maintain professional knowledge through advising training and professional development.
Contribute to continuous improvement of advising services and student experience.
What qualifies you for this role:
Required
A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
One year of professional experience in academic advising, higher education, student services, counseling, enrollment services, or a closely related field.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with diverse student populations.
Ability to exercise sound judgment while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Knowledge of or ability to learn FERPA and university academic policies.
Strong organizational, planning, and time-management skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Ability to interpret academic policies and explain complex information clearly.
Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and campus partners.
Ability to learn and effectively use student information systems and advising technologies.
Preferred:
Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Academic Advising, Education, or a related field.
Experience advising students in health professions or limited-enrollment academic program.
Experience interpreting university academic policies and degree requirements.
Experience working with student information systems (Salesforce or similar).
Knowledge of nursing education pathways and licensure requirements.
Familiarity with BYU policies, curriculum, and student information systems.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
Knowledge of academic advising theory and best practices (e.g., NACADA framework).
Experience developing presentations and facilitating or presenting informational sessions.
Graduate Certificate in Academic Advising or NACADA Academic Advising Certificate.
