The Opportunity The Division of Acute Care Surgery at Corewell Health West is seeking its twentieth acute care surgeon to join a well established and growing service line at one of the busiest acute care surgery programs in the country. We are looking for a colleague who is drawn to complex, high volume work and who wants to help impact a program that continues to evolve. Our surgeons find meaningful ways to contribute beyond the clinical work, and we support them in doing so. Who We Are The Division is comprised of nineteen surgeons and nine advanced practice providers who care for the traumatically injured, critically ill, burned, and emergency general surgery patients at Butterworth Hospital, an ACS verified Level I Adult Trauma Center for thirty-five consecutive years. Second busiest trauma center in the state of Michigan Highest emergency general surgery volume in the state of Michigan One of the highest volume robotic EGS programs in the country , having recently surpassed 2,000 robotic emergency general surgery cases Seven day a week dedicated block time, with an operating room frequently running through the night Butterworth Hospital serves as a quaternary referral center for a region of more than 9 million people, supported by an extensive EMS and AeroMed flight system, with over 350,000 emergency room visits and 75,000 admissions each year. Our Commitment to Verification and Continuous Improvement We view performance improvement and patient safety as the mechanism through which a program gets better over time, and our verification work reflects that. We ask every member of the team to take part. Trauma: ACS verified Level I for thirty five years, with active participation in the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) and the Michigan Trauma Quality Improvement Program Burn: Recently completed our ABA consultation visit, with formal verification anticipated within the next twelve months Emergency General Surgery: In the early stages of pursuing ACS EGS verification and an active contributor to the Michigan Acute Care Surgery database Understanding our opportunities through objective data is central to how we work, and our surgeons are encouraged to engage with that data and to help us act on it. Practice Structure The hired surgeon will rotate through trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. Five of our surgeons provide burn care. While we are not currently recruiting a burn surgeon, all of our surgeons participate in the acute resuscitation of the burn patient and in the care of the burn patient in the surgical ICU setting. We do not work twenty four hour shifts. Coverage follows a 10 and 14 hour split, with day shifts, night shifts, weekends, and holidays distributed equitably across the year. Education and Academics As one of the main teaching hospitals for Michigan State University, the Division supports an ACGME accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, currently two fellows, and a General Surgery Residency that graduates six residents each year. Opportunities for the education of medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as clinical and translational research, are abundant, and teaching is an expected and valued part of the role. The Colleague We Are Looking For Board certified in General Surgery and in Surgical Critical Care (Eligible is OK if you are a new graduate). Beyond credentials, we are looking for a surgeon who: Thrives in a fast paced, high volume environment and is comfortable triaging competing demands across a busy service Leads and delegates effectively across a multidisciplinary team that includes advanced practice providers, residents, and fellows Communicates clearly and consistently, particularly at handoff and across service lines Values performance improvement and patient safety as the foundation of a well functioning program and participates actively in that work Looks for ways to raise the tide, contributing to the division in ways that extend beyond excellent clinical care Why Our Team Stays We have had essentially no surgeon or advanced practice provider turnover in recent years, which may be the most useful metric we can tell you about what it is like to work here. The volume is high and the cases are complex, but the team is deeply engaged, colleagues support one another, and the work is genuinely rewarding. We are a family and we have a good time providing excellent care. If you are looking for a collaborative, innovative, data informed team where your contributions are visible and your growth is supported, we would welcome a conversation.
