Specialist 2: Oceanographic Equipment Technician (Short Term)

Job Summary: The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is seeking an hourly, short-term, Specialist 2: Oceanographic Equipment Technician. This is a part-time (.60 FTE), 12-month position. This position is expected to last approximately 3 months. The person in this position will assist in preparation of moorings and gliders for deployment in the ocean. Equipment are part of the National Science Foundation’s Ocean Observatories Initiative Endurance Array, which is operated by Oregon State University (oceanobservatories.org/array/coastal-endurance). This is a hands-on role created to address NSF’s recent plan to redeploy portions of the Endurance Array ASAP (www.nsf.gov/news/update-ocean-observatories-initiative). Key Responsibilities: 1. Disassemble, clean, and inspect OOI equipment recovered from the ocean. 2. Assemble OOI equipment that will be deployed in the ocean. 3. Assist in mobilizing equipment for field operations. 4. Complete tasks as assigned by senior OOI-EA staff members. 5. Follow directions provided via OOI-EA’s written procedures, mechanical & electrical drawings, or from senior staff. 6. Ability and willingness to go to sea 1-3 days a month to assist in the deployment and recovery of OOI equipment. Qualifications: Required Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in science or engineering. Experience maintaining scientific equipment that is designed to be deployed outdoors Preferred Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in oceanography Experience assembling and testing complex equipment like oceanographic moorings Experience on boats Working Conditions/Schedule: Almost all work will take place in the Ocean Observing Center in south Corvallis.
