Description of Work The primary purpose of this position is to provide supervision, training, and supportive counseling to NCSD residential school students. Student Life Trainers ensure a safe and secure environment and monitor and supervise students. This position also enhances learning opportunities and assists students in a variety of age-appropriate activities that include personal hygiene and grooming, homework, and projects, and social and/or recreational activities. The position holder may may tutor students in academic subjects and skill development, conduct formal and informal learning exercises, and provide supportive counseling on interpersonal relationships and appropriate behaviors. Student Life Trainers may also teaching objectives related to the residential program and evaluate student progress emulating the parenting role in settings that serve children. *Hiring for multiple positions on second (2nd) and third (3rd) shift.* **Shift premium pay for evenings, nights and weekends.** ***This is a full time 10 month position that follows the school calendar.*** Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Management Preferences: Ability to use American Sign Language (ASL) to effectively communicate with students, parents and staff. Over two years of experience with providing assistance in a residential or long term care setting. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities needed for a successful Student Life Trainer are : Personal Care of Students: Assist students with developing a functional understanding of personal growth including punctuality, cooking, cleaning, budgeting, laundry, formal social skills and behavior. Assist with personal hygiene, independent living skills, first aid, manners, survival skills, self-esteem, developing good character, assisting with services from the community, proper etiquette, nutrition, homework, class projects and reading, creating a home environment while maintaining rules and guidance with all students, supervising students at all times on and off campus. Provide recreational and educational field trips for students, making the dorm area a friendly home-like atmosphere; being a positive role model;. Refer students to the Student Health Center for medical attention if needed. Use ASL; signing at all times and attending classes to improve sign language. Assist with transportation as assigned, monitoring students on bus trips, and ensuring students are transported to and from home safety; driving or monitoring (or both) as scheduled during field trips for the students; Write weekly activity plans, including dorm rules, bedtime/wake-up schedules, meal schedules, homework/study hall schedules, and recreational activities; consulting and cooperating with teachers to ensure IEP goals are met. Student Interaction and Interventions: Monitors student’s behavior on an ongoing basis to evaluate safety and program involvement; counsels students regarding their interactions with peers, parents, and hearing persons. Maintains contact with the academic teachers to provide information about health and behavioral issues that may be pertinent to the school; plans , Monitors, and supervises activities after school. Assists with new admissions, orienting new students to the dormitory and explaining dormitory routines and schedules. Obtains certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) to intervene in situations appropriately; provides discipline when dormitory rules and regulations are broken. Responds to specific life threatening situations and takes immediate action according to established protocols including first aid measures, contacting the SHC, basic life support, and documentation. Reports early signs of behaviors, mood changes, and takes measures to decrease escalating agitation. Adheres to school policies and maintains appropriate vigilance for students on high risk. Housekeeping Responsibilities: Inventories student’s clothing and properly identifies clothing that needs repairs or is inappropriate. Reports needed dormitory repairs to supervisor. Performs lite housekeeping duties assigned for the shift according to needs. Keep adequate supply of towels and linen in storage; launders towels, linen, and clothing as needed. Instructs and assists students in daily chores to help maintain dormitory cleanliness. Documentation and Communication: Completes a daily log on each student Perform out scheduled rounds timely. Participates in group discussions conducted by the Residential Life Coordinator, Director of Residential Services, or School Director. Communicates all pertinent information regarding student status at shift change; attends classes, meetings, and workshops as directed. Reports to the Residential Life Coordinator any issues or potential foreseen problems.
